Eraserhead changed my life and if I could only come close to re-creating the wonderful droning industrial sound throughout the film I could rest easy at night.

I’ve been selected for two shows, both taking place in September. Both shows will feature a selection of new drawings.

‘Illustrated Word’ will be on in NGG in Temple Bar and will open on the 2nd of September and features the work of seven artists. More information can be found at the link below:

‘Preponderance of the Small’ is an off-site project with the Douglas Hyde Gallery in Trinity College and will feature twenty ‘emerging’ artists. I will be showing a series of drawings in the Arts Block. This opens the 25th of September and more info can be found at this link:

I spent 1716.75 hours in work. By work I do not mean art, I mean literally my desk job. Considering I was only doing a four day week in order to spend my other days making art, that’s a hell of a lot of hours. If you do the maths I think you will, in fact, find I was actually doing 5 and 6 day weeks with a few 4 day ones thrown in for good measure. I feel silly for not realising this and taking it into account at the time. I spent all of 2008 punishing myself for being a bad artist when in fact I was spending so much time in work it’s no wonder there was no time or energy left for art. I have learnt my lesson. I’ve got my priorities straight!

I did no work whatsoever in 2008. It’s not a long story but just one I haven’t been able to put into words just yet. When I figure out what happened in 2008 I’ll let you know.

I am a twenty something artist living in Dublin. I do not have the privilege of being able to prance around a studio all day long navel gazing (detect the bitterness) as I really do have bills to pay. So I consider myself office pleb by day, distraught and frustrated artist by night. My ultimate aim is not world domination but really just to find a nice quiet corner to make art in, in humble surroundings and occasionally connect with an audience in a meaningful, albeit understated, way. Ultimately of course I would like to shed my office disguise and become a fully fledged ‘professional’ artist though I have no understanding of how this might be achieved if I continue to make the kind of work I make. They are, I think, quite accessible once you have given up questioning whether they are drawings or not. They often have text which makes them easier to access but sometimes this text can be unnerving. I’ve always liked words so it’s been quite natural for me to incorporate them into my work. At one point I thought using words was a cop-out. I felt that if I had to rely on the weight of words to get my meaning across then my work was failing in some way. But I understand now that words are not the easy way out. They come with a lot of baggage that needs to be ignored in order to make the work sincere and not overly self-conscious. So, now I use words. The idea of the mantra is important in the work as a mantra can be a good thing; an affirmation of something positive/hopeful, or a bad thing; an unpleasant thought stuck in your head that just goes round and round in a vicious circle. For me my mantras are often the latter. When I type a piece I insist on ‘manually’ typing the mantra repeatedly, as such, copy and paste are not my friends. I guess this just reinforces the weight of repetition. It also forces me to experience each word individually, making these tiresome thoughts in my head into a physically laborious task with an end product that is far more tangible and manageable than any of my thoughts.

So there you have it. Words are now also drawings.

O.k so I’ve neglected to search for the right words for quite some time now. Here I go….

I was at my friends wedding recently and I met a person who was intrigued by the fact I was an artist. He struck up a conversation about my art which invariably made me shudder. I think most artists like talking to other people about their art practices. I lose the ability to form cohesive sentences when people ask me about mine. Specifically I hate talking about the video work. A non art-educated person often has no idea where I am coming from or what I am talking about. This is in no way a short-coming on their part. If I was able to explain my video work properly to them then there would be no problem, but because I have great difficulty talking about it I have invariably led some people to believe that I am an an actor/that I’m into theatre/that I’m a dancer and best/worst of all that I am a mine artist!? With the way certain things are going right now some people are inevitably going to assume I am a ‘burlesque performer’ (double shudder!). So anyway…this person starts asking about my work. I throw out a few vague and sweeping statements that I’m hoping will appease him. No such luck. He forces me to break it down. To describe in detail. To explain the physical actions. He doesn’t seem scared which is good and all the while I’m glad I’ve already had a few drinks. We go on to discuss my inability to explain to people what ‘performance based video art’ (a term I use all too frequently) is and, at the end of the conversation, he looks at me and says; what you’re talking about is ‘video portraiture’. Now that makes sense. The average person understands the term portraiture and we all know what video is. Combine the two and you probably equip someone with a much greater understanding of what you’re talking about rather than throwing the bullshit art college term ‘performance based video art’ at them. I like this video portraiture idea. I wish I’d thought of applying this term to my work years ago. I’m hoping to phase out the old nonsense term and re-invent myself with video portraiture. I’ll let you know how I get on.

So, in short, my video work is video portraiture.
